Cysts

What are epidermoid and sebaceous cysts?
Epidermoid cysts are benign growths made up of keratin and fat in a sac. They usually appear on the face, neck, or upper body, especially the chest and shoulders. When they are formed because of swelling around hair follicles, they are called pilar cysts. Epidermoid cysts are usually small, from a few millimeters to about 5 centimeters across, and they grow slowly. They are more common in men than in women. Sebaceous cysts are much less common and affect the sebaceous glands, the oil glands in the skin.

How are cysts treated?
Cysts are removed surgically as an outpatient procedure which means you donot need a hospital stay.
The procedure is as follows: First, local anesthetic is injected into the skin and then a small incision is made. The content of the cyst is emptied and capsule or sac removed. If sutured the stitches are removed in 3-10 days depending on the location the cyst was.

How long does the treatment take?
10 minutes.

How to take care of the skin after the treatment?
Keep the treated area dry for at least 12 hours.
Apply an antibiotic cream two times a day for 10 days.
Avoid touching the scab which will form as it will come off on its own in 5-15 days.
You may resume your daily activities immediately after the treatment.
